How Laser Hair Removal Works

Light energy absorbed by the pigment inside the hair follicle.

Laser hair removal directs light energy at the hair. Pigment absorbs it and turns it into heat, which travels to the follicle and damages the structure that produces the hair. Treated follicles tend to grow back finer and sparser, and some stop producing hair.

The honest term is permanent hair reduction, not permanent hair removal. Many people see a lasting drop in how much hair grows back, then hold that result with occasional maintenance sessions. No clinic can honestly promise you will never shave again.

Treatment is carried out at our Oakville clinic under the medical direction of Dr. Andrea Garcia, MD CCFP, and this kind of equipment is regulated in Canada by Health Canada.

Why It Takes a Course of Sessions

Hair grows in cycles, so only part of it is treatable each visit.

Every hair runs through a cycle, and only hair in its active growing phase holds enough pigment for the laser to act on. At any moment only a share of the hair in an area is in that phase.

  1. Active growthThe hair is anchored in the follicle and rich in pigment. This is the only phase a session can act on.
  2. TransitionGrowth stops and the hair separates from the follicle, so there is far less to target.
  3. RestingThe follicle sits dormant, then pushes out a new hair that can be treated later.

That is why a course spaced several weeks apart is needed rather than one visit, and why our rates are set in packages of five and eight, which work out lower per session. How many sessions suit you depends on your hair, your skin and the area, so the count is set at consultation, never promised in advance. Every rate is on our price list.

Areas We Treat in Oakville

From one small area to a full body course.

Hair can be treated almost anywhere on the face and body. What you pay depends on the size of the area, not the particular spot. Small areas such as the upper lip or chin sit at the bottom of the ladder, full body at the top. The areas we are asked about most:

Each of those pages sets out what the appointment involves and what it costs. If you are treating more than one area, ask about the larger tiers, since a combination such as chest with abdomen is priced as one larger area.

Is Laser Hair Removal Right for You?

Candid guidance on hair colour, skin and timing.

Because the treatment targets pigment, it responds best to dark hair. Blonde, red, grey and white hair contains little or no pigment for the laser to find, so results on those colours are far less predictable. If that is your hair, we would rather say so at consultation than sell you a course unlikely to deliver.

Skin tone matters too, since different skin types call for different settings. Hormonal factors can drive hair growth, in which case maintenance may be needed more often.

Timing matters as well. Recent sun exposure or a tan, real or sprayed, raises the risk of a reaction, so treatment is generally postponed until skin settles. Waxing, plucking and threading remove the root the laser needs, so shave between sessions. Treatment is also generally not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or over active infection or inflammation. Our aftercare guidance covers what to do before and after each visit.

What Sessions Feel Like, and What Comes After

Short appointments, little downtime, a result that builds.

Most people describe the sensation as a warm snap against the skin, quick and manageable rather than painful. Small areas such as the upper lip or underarms are often finished in a few minutes, larger areas take longer.

Redness and a warm, prickly feeling are common for a day or so, and most people carry on as normal. Sun protection matters while treated skin settles.

Shedding is gradual. Treated hairs work their way out over the following weeks, so the difference builds across the course rather than after one visit. Results vary, and maintenance sessions are generally needed to keep them.

Frequently Asked Questions About Laser Hair Removal in Oakville

Still deciding? These are the questions we hear most.

If your question is not answered here, our team is happy to help.

How much does laser hair removal cost in Oakville?
Rates depend on the size of the area and on whether you book a single session or a package. For women, a small area is $50 single, $225 for five or $350 for eight. For men it is $70 single, $315 for five or $490 for eight. Full body as a single session is $400 for women and $600 for men.
How many laser hair removal sessions will I need?
There is no fixed number that suits everyone, so we will not promise one. Only hair in its active growing phase responds, so a course spaced several weeks apart is needed. Our rates are priced in fives and eights, and the count that suits you is set at consultation.
Is laser hair removal permanent?
The accurate term is permanent hair reduction rather than permanent removal. Treated follicles often produce finer, sparser hair and some stop producing hair, but maintenance sessions are generally needed to hold the result.
Does laser hair removal work on blonde, red, grey or white hair?
Much less predictably. The laser targets pigment, and blonde, red, grey and white hair contains very little of it. We would rather tell you at consultation that your hair is unlikely to respond well than sell you a package.
Does laser hair removal hurt?
Most people describe it as a warm snap against the skin rather than pain, and small areas are often finished in a few minutes. Redness and a warm, prickly feeling for a day or so afterwards are common.
How should I prepare for a laser hair removal session?
Shave the area shortly before your appointment, because the laser needs the root below the surface. Avoid waxing, plucking and threading between sessions, and avoid sun, tanning and spray tans beforehand. Our aftercare guidance covers this in full.
