IPL vs Laser in Oakville: Sun Damage, Rosacea and Texture

IPL vs laser usually comes down to one question: is your concern colour or texture? At our clinic, IPL treats colour, meaning the redness of rosacea and the brown spots and blotchy tone of sun damage, while laser skin rejuvenation treats texture and fine lines.

This guide explains how the two differ and how we help you choose. We do not name devices here, because the right choice is about your skin, not a machine.

IPL Photofacial vs Laser: How the Light Differs

Two light-based technologies that are often confused.

IPL stands for intense pulsed light. It comes from a high-output flashlamp that releases short pulses of broad spectrum light across a wide range of wavelengths. Filters remove the wavelengths that are not needed, so the light can be tuned to what is being treated. A laser works differently: it produces a single, concentrated wavelength of light. IPL is not a laser.

With IPL, the filtered light is absorbed by two natural pigments in the skin: hemoglobin, the red pigment in the blood inside small vessels, and melanin, the brown pigment in sun spots. They heat up and are damaged, and the body gradually clears them. That makes IPL a treatment for colour across a whole area, which is what rosacea redness and sun damage are.

The laser skin rejuvenation we offer does a different job. It is used for the texture and surface of the skin rather than its colour. Neither is simply better; they answer different questions, and both are non-invasive treatments at our clinic.

IPL vs Laser for Rosacea and Sun Damage

Why colour concerns go to IPL at our clinic.

Redness and rosacea. IPL targets hemoglobin across an area, so it generally suits diffuse redness and flushing spread across the face. Vascular lasers are another option some clinics use for specific vessels. For redness spread across the cheeks and nose, IPL covers a broader area. At our clinic, rosacea redness is treated with IPL, and one or a few individual vessels with targeted capillary removal, listed at $250. Read more about IPL for rosacea and facial redness.

Sun damage. Sun damage is usually a mix of brown spots and redness. IPL can target melanin and hemoglobin in the same treatment, which is why our clinic treats sun damage with IPL rather than laser. For only a few distinct spots, targeted freckle removal, from $175 on our price list, may be simpler. See IPL for sun damage on the face, chest and hands.

Our IPL photofacial guide covers sessions, recovery and price.

When Laser Skin Rejuvenation Is the Better Choice

Texture and fine lines are a different problem.

IPL works on colour. It is not a treatment for texture, fine lines or pores. If what bothers you is how your skin feels or catches the light, rather than its colour, laser skin rejuvenation is generally the better fit. Read more on our laser skin rejuvenation page.

Microneedling uses fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries that prompt the skin’s own repair response, and our DP4 microneedling page explains how it works. A chemical peel, $150 on our price list, is another option your provider may discuss.

Plenty of people have both colour and texture concerns. In that case, treatments may be planned in sequence, spaced as your provider advises, rather than all at once.

How We Help You Choose Between IPL Photofacial and Laser

A consultation-first decision, with no device sales pitch.

The choice between IPL and laser is made with you, under the medical direction of Dr. Andrea Garcia, MD CCFP.

  1. Look at your skinYour provider assesses whether your main concern is colour, texture or both.
  2. Check suitabilityYour skin type, recent sun exposure, medications and any melasma are reviewed, and any new or changing spot is referred to a physician first.
  3. Recommend honestlyYou hear which treatment is likely to help, including when the answer is neither.
  4. PlanYou agree the treatment, how it will be spaced and the cost before anything begins.

Skin type matters. IPL is generally best suited to lighter skin tones, because the risk of pigment change rises in darker skin, and a test spot may be advised. Melasma needs care too: IPL can worsen it, so it is generally not recommended where melasma is present, and your skin is assessed first.

Timing matters for IPL as well. Recently tanned skin is generally not treated, so many people start a course in autumn or winter, once a tan has faded and sun exposure is lower.

IPL Photofacial and Laser: Results and Recovery

Different treatments, different healing.

After IPL, redness and some swelling are common for hours to a few days. Treated brown spots often darken and can look like coffee grounds on the skin, then crust within a day or two and flake away within about a week. IPL is given as a series, with sessions generally about four weeks apart, and the change builds across the course.

Recovery after laser skin rejuvenation depends on the plan, and your provider explains it before you book. Either way, there is some recovery to plan for, and your provider gives you written aftercare for your treatment. Our general aftercare guidance for our in-clinic treatments covers several of our other treatments.

Neither treatment stops the skin from aging or the sun from causing new damage. Daily sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher protects your result, and results vary from person to person.

Frequently Asked Questions About IPL Photofacials vs Laser

Questions about IPL, laser and your skin, answered.

If your question is not answered here, our team is happy to help. The clearest answer usually comes from a consultation, where your provider can assess your skin directly.

Is IPL a type of laser?
No. IPL, or intense pulsed light, uses a flashlamp that releases a broad spectrum of light, filtered to suit the concern. A laser uses a single, concentrated wavelength. Both are light-based treatments, but they are different technologies, and IPL should not be described as a laser.
Which is better for redness and rosacea, IPL or laser?
For diffuse redness and flushing spread across the face, our clinic uses IPL, which targets the red pigment in small vessels across a whole area. Vascular lasers are another option some clinics use for specific vessels. For one or a few individual vessels, our targeted capillary removal may suit you better.
Which is better for sun spots?
At our clinic, sun damage is treated with IPL, because it can target brown pigment and redness together across an area such as the face, chest or hands. If you have only a few distinct spots, targeted freckle removal may be simpler. Any new or changing spot should be checked by a physician first.
Which is better for fine lines and texture?
Laser skin rejuvenation. IPL works on colour and is not a treatment for texture, fine lines or pores. If texture is your main concern, your provider may suggest laser skin rejuvenation, and microneedling or a chemical peel may also be discussed at consultation.
Can I combine IPL with other treatments?
Sometimes, when suitable. Because IPL works on colour and other treatments work on texture, some people plan more than one as part of a wider treatment plan. Spacing and order are agreed at consultation.
How do I know which one I need?
Start with what bothers you most. If it is redness or brown spots, IPL is generally the place to begin. If it is texture or fine lines, laser skin rejuvenation is generally the better fit. A consultation confirms this, checks your skin type and suitability, and sets a realistic plan.
