Sofwave vs Ultherapy: How They Compare in Oakville

Sofwave vs Ultherapy is a fair question, because both use ultrasound to prompt your skin to make new collagen. The difference is in how and where: Sofwave sends parallel, non-focused beams to about 1.5 mm in the mid-dermis, while Ultherapy focuses its energy at set depths that reach deeper tissue, with imaging as it goes.

We offer Sofwave. We do not offer Ultherapy, Thermage or HIFU, so this page compares them on published facts rather than preference, to help you judge whether Sofwave is a sensible option for your skin.

Is Sofwave the Same as Ultherapy?

The same energy family, with a different delivery and depth.

No, although the confusion is understandable. Both heat tissue in a controlled way so the body responds by laying down fresh collagen. Beyond that shared principle, they are built differently, aim at different depths, and have been studied differently.

Sofwave uses SUPERB, or Synchronous Ultrasound Parallel Beam, technology. Seven parallel transducers deliver high-frequency, non-focused ultrasound that forms small cylindrical zones of heat at about 1.5 mm below the surface, in the mid-dermis, while built-in contact cooling protects the outer layer of skin. The fat beneath and the deeper supporting layers are not the target.

Ultherapy uses microfocused ultrasound with visualization. Its energy is concentrated into points at depths of 1.5, 3.0 and 4.5 mm, and the deepest setting reaches the SMAS, a deeper supporting layer of the face. An imaging function lets the practitioner see the tissue beneath the handpiece during treatment.

Neither is better in the abstract. The useful question is which depth and which approach suits your skin and your concern, and that is what a consultation for Sofwave skin tightening in Oakville sets out to answer.

Sofwave vs Thermage and HIFU

Ultrasound, radiofrequency and focused points are not interchangeable.

The comparison often widens into two more names, so it helps to separate them by energy type and depth.

  • Thermage: monopolar radiofrequency, an electrical energy, heating the deeper dermis and the tissue beneath
  • HIFU: a general term for focused ultrasound, with depth varying by device and cartridge

So is Sofwave HIFU? Not quite. Its beams are parallel and non-focused rather than concentrated to a point in deeper tissue. It is not a laser, and it is not radiofrequency. With Sofwave, nothing is cut and nothing is injected.

Depth is not a score where deeper wins. Sofwave is designed to work within the skin itself, which is why we describe it as a treatment for mild to moderate laxity rather than for tissue that has already dropped.

Sofwave and Ultherapy Side by Side

What the published descriptions of each device say, and nothing more.

Sofwave

Offered at Oakville Flawless Cosmetic

  • Ultrasound delivered as parallel, non-focused beams
  • Targets about 1.5 mm, the mid-dermis
  • No imaging during treatment
  • Often one treatment, decided at consultation
  • Change generally appears over weeks to months

Ultherapy

Not offered at our clinic

  • Ultrasound concentrated into microfocused points
  • Treats at depths of 1.5, 3.0 and 4.5 mm
  • The 4.5 mm depth reaches the SMAS
  • Imaging shows tissue to about 8 mm during treatment
  • A different device from Sofwave, not a version of it

What the Evidence Actually Compared

One small head-to-head study, and what it can and cannot tell you.

You may read that one of these treatments hurts less. We found only one study that put them side by side. It was a randomized split-body trial on the upper inner arms of 14 people, published in 2026. Parallel-beam ultrasound was found to be as effective as microfocused ultrasound, there was no statistically significant difference in pain, and the parallel-beam treatment took less time.

That is useful and also limited. It studied arms, not faces, in a small sample. It supports saying the two appeared comparable in one small study, not that either is better or gentler, so we do not say that.

Sofwave’s own face and neck evidence is broader. In the main published study, 58 people completed a single treatment, and at 12 weeks 72% of participants noticed improvement themselves. A 2026 study of 42 people found that 83.3% improved in laxity under the chin and at the neck at three months, but only 28.6% showed brow elevation. Studies suggest a real average benefit, with a meaningful share of people who see little change.

Published pain scores for Sofwave also vary widely, so we never describe it as painless. For timing and variation, see what Sofwave results look like over time.

Sofwave vs RF Skin Tightening at Our Clinic

The comparison you can actually make here.

If you are choosing between treatments we offer, the relevant comparison is Sofwave against our own RF Skin Tightening. Radiofrequency heats the skin electrically rather than with sound waves, with the same broad aim of encouraging it to firm over time.

We do not treat one as a cheaper version of the other. Which is more appropriate depends on your skin, the degree of laxity and the area involved, and the number of sessions for either is set at consultation.

Where tissue has begun to descend, a thread lift may reposition it modestly, and where you would prefer gradual, injected collagen stimulation, Sculptra works on a similar principle by a different route. For the neck, our guide to non-surgical neck tightening sorts the causes. You can also browse our wider range of non-invasive treatments.

Whichever of our treatments you choose, the plan is made under the medical direction of Dr. Andrea Garcia, MD CCFP, and your provider gives you aftercare for that treatment. Our general aftercare guidance for our in-clinic treatments covers several of our injectable treatments. Ultherapy and Thermage are trademarks of their respective owners.

What Neither Treatment Can Do

Significant sagging is a surgical conversation.

It is worth being clear about the ceiling. Sofwave, Ultherapy, Thermage and HIFU are all non-invasive energy treatments, and none of them removes excess skin or repositions tissue that has already descended.

Sofwave is best suited to mild to moderate laxity. If clear heaviness in the lower face or a visibly loose neck is your main concern, no energy based device is likely to satisfy you, and a surgical opinion is the better next step. We would rather tell you that at consultation than sell you a treatment that cannot meet your expectations.

Sofwave vs Ultherapy: Common Questions

Still comparing? These are the questions we hear most.

If your question is not answered here, our team is happy to help, and a consultation gives the clearest answer.

Is Sofwave the same as Ultherapy?
No. Both use ultrasound to prompt new collagen, but Sofwave sends parallel, non-focused beams to about 1.5 mm in the mid-dermis, while Ultherapy concentrates energy into points at 1.5, 3.0 and 4.5 mm and uses imaging during treatment. They are different devices, with different evidence behind them.
Is Sofwave a type of HIFU?
Not in the usual sense. HIFU devices focus ultrasound into points, at depths that vary by device. Sofwave’s beams are parallel and non-focused, and they heat zones within the mid-dermis rather than a focal point in deeper tissue. Sofwave is also not a laser and not radiofrequency.
Which hurts more, Sofwave or Ultherapy?
There is no good evidence that either is clearly more comfortable. The only head-to-head study we found, a small trial on the upper arms, reported no statistically significant difference in pain. Published pain scores for Sofwave vary widely, so comfort measures are discussed with you before treatment.
Is Sofwave radiofrequency, like Thermage?
No. Thermage is a monopolar radiofrequency device that uses electrical energy to heat the deeper dermis and the tissue beneath it. Sofwave uses ultrasound aimed at the mid-dermis. Our clinic offers its own RF Skin Tightening as a separate treatment, and your provider can explain how it differs from Sofwave.
Can Sofwave replace a facelift?
No. Sofwave may firm mild to moderate laxity by stimulating collagen, but it cannot remove excess skin or reposition tissue that has descended, and the same is true of other energy based devices. Where sagging is significant, a surgical opinion is the better next step, and we will tell you so.
Does Oakville Flawless Cosmetic offer Ultherapy?
No. We do not offer Ultherapy, Thermage or HIFU. We offer Sofwave and our own RF Skin Tightening, and this comparison is here to help you understand the differences, not to steer you. If Sofwave is unlikely to suit your skin, your provider will say so at consultation.
