Jowl Treatment in Oakville: Non-Surgical Options

The right jowl treatment depends on your stage. Early softening along the jawline may respond to Sofwave skin tightening, lost structure along the jaw may suit filler, and tissue that has begun to descend may suit a thread lift. Once jowls are heavy and well established, surgery is usually the more honest answer.

We assess which stage you are at before suggesting anything, and we will tell you plainly if a non-surgical option is unlikely to meet your expectations.

What Causes Jowls?

Several gradual changes that add up along the jawline.

Jowls are the softening of tissue along the lower edge of the face, just beside the chin, that blurs a once clean jawline. They rarely have a single cause. More often, several gradual changes add up:

  • Skin that has lost some firmness along the lower face
  • Volume in the cheek and along the jaw that has reduced
  • Tissue that once sat higher settling below the jawline
  • Deeper lines at the mouth corners, which can accompany jowls

Which of these is driving your jowls decides what is likely to help. A treatment that firms skin will not replace lost volume, and filler cannot tighten skin that has loosened. That is why we start with an assessment rather than a treatment name, and why every plan here is made under the medical direction of Dr. Andrea Garcia, MD CCFP.

How to Get Rid of Jowls: Treatment by Stage

A ladder of options, not a single answer.

Non-surgical treatment can soften jowls and improve the line of the jaw. It does not erase them, and the realistic aim is a meaningful, natural improvement. The options, roughly from earliest stage to latest:

  1. Early softening of the skinSofwave skin tightening may firm mild to moderate laxity gradually, by prompting new collagen in the mid-dermis.
  2. Lost structure along the jawJawline fillers can add definition where volume has reduced, with a change visible the same day.
  3. Deeper lines at the mouth cornersMarionette line fillers can soften the lines and shadows that can accompany jowls.
  4. Tissue beginning to descendA thread lift may reposition tissue modestly using dissolvable threads, with results lasting months rather than years.
  5. Significant descentHeavy, well established jowls or loose skin generally need a surgical opinion.

Many people sit between two rungs, and a plan may combine options. Because filler shows a change the same day while Sofwave works gradually over weeks to months, the order matters, and your provider will explain which fits you and in what order.

Sofwave for Jowls and the Jawline

For early laxity, with realistic expectations.

Where jowling is early and the main issue is skin that has softened, Sofwave is a sensible first conversation. It delivers ultrasound energy about 1.5 mm into the skin while the surface is cooled, and the new collagen that follows may firm the lower face gradually over weeks to months.

The evidence for the lower face is encouraging but modest. A study of 36 people treated once reported a statistically significant reduction in the depth of the nasolabial folds and marionette lines at one and three months. Another study found that a trend toward reduced volume under the jaw was not statistically significant, so Sofwave is not a way to slim the jawline. Participants in the lower face study rated discomfort at an average of about 6.6 out of 10, so comfort measures are discussed with you beforehand.

According to the manufacturer, a Sofwave appointment generally takes about 30 to 45 minutes. Many people have a single treatment, and your provider will advise whether more may help. The main published trial included a wide range of skin tones, and the reactions most often reported afterwards were temporary redness and occasional mild swelling. Sofwave does not add volume and does not reposition tissue that has dropped. For the full timeline, see what Sofwave results look like over time, or visit our main Sofwave page. Jawline Filler, Threads or Sofwave?

Choosing between the non-surgical options.

These treatments are often compared as rivals, but they do different jobs. Filler restores structure where volume has reduced. Threads reposition tissue modestly. Sofwave firms skin gradually. The right choice depends on which change is most responsible for your jowls, and sometimes more than one plays a part.

Sometimes the jawline is best supported from the chin, and chin fillers may be discussed where that applies. Where general firmness and volume have faded across the lower face, Sculptra works gradually by stimulating collagen. If the neck is part of your concern, our guide to neck tightening explains the options there.

Our team includes Lin Nickel, Advanced Aesthetic Nurse Injector, with more than 10 years of experience and certification through Allergan (Botox) and Galderma (Dysport). Our post-treatment care page covers dermal filler and thread lift aftercare, and for Sofwave your provider gives you aftercare for your treatment, so you know what the following days involve.

When Jowls Are Too Advanced for Non-Surgical Treatment

Knowing the limits.

No non-invasive or injectable treatment removes excess skin. When jowls are heavy, when there is loose skin below the jawline, or when tissue has descended significantly, the options on this page are unlikely to give you the result you want, however they are combined.

In that situation a surgical opinion is the better next step, and we will tell you so at consultation. Knowing early that a treatment cannot meet your expectations saves time, money and disappointment, and it means any treatment you do choose is chosen for the right reasons.

Jowl Treatment: Common Questions

Still deciding? These are the questions we hear most.

If your question is not answered here, our team is happy to help, and a consultation gives the clearest answer.

What causes jowls?
Jowls generally develop as several changes add up over time. Skin can lose firmness, volume along the cheek and jaw can reduce, and tissue that once sat higher can settle below the jawline. Most people have a mix, which is why treatment is matched to what is driving your jowls rather than to the word itself.
Can jowls be treated without surgery?
Early jowls can often be softened without surgery. Depending on the cause, that may mean Sofwave for mild skin laxity, filler to restore structure along the jaw, or a thread lift to reposition tissue modestly. Well established, heavy jowls are a different matter, and a surgical opinion is usually the better route.
Can Sofwave help with jowls?
It may help when jowling is early and driven by mild to moderate skin laxity. Sofwave stimulates new collagen in the mid-dermis, so change is gradual over weeks to months. It does not add volume or reposition descended tissue, so it is less suited to jowls caused by volume loss or significant sagging.
Should I choose jawline filler or Sofwave for jowls?
They do different jobs. Jawline filler adds structure and definition where volume has been lost, with a change visible the same day. Sofwave firms mildly lax skin gradually by stimulating collagen. Some people benefit from one, some from both and some from neither, and your provider will tell you which applies to you.
Can Botox help with jowls?
Botox is not a primary treatment for jowls and will not lift heavy or descended tissue. Your provider can explain which options suit the cause of your jowls.
When are jowls too advanced for non-surgical treatment?
When there is clear heaviness below the jawline, loose skin, or tissue that has descended significantly, non-surgical treatments are unlikely to satisfy, because none of them removes excess skin. In that situation a surgical opinion is the better next step, and we will say so rather than offer something that cannot meet your expectations.
